   Glycolic acid ---Manufacture methods

1. Chloroacetic acid hydrolysis method

         chloroactic acid reacts with sodium hydroxide (with methanol) and produce hydroxy-acetic acid methyl ester, then after hydrolysis, we can get glycolic acid.
        The reaction equation is as follows:
        ClCH2COOH + NaOH HOCH2COOH + NaCl

2. Formaldehyde carbonylationl method
       Under high temperature, high pressure and acid catalyst, Formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and water react and can produce glycolic acid .
         The reaction equation is as follows:
     

3. Formaldehyde cyanidation method
        Formaldehyde reacts with hydrocyanic acid to produce glycolonitrile, then undergo the hydrolysis to get glycolic acid. This method features simple technics, stable operation and good quality of products.

Microbe catalysis method:
         This method is developed by Research Center of Shanghai Biochemical Technology. In the microbial fermentation, special microorganism containing nitrilase is produced, the nitrilase can catalyze the glycolonitrile hydrolyse to yield glycolic acid.
